Most temporary fence failures happen not because the panels are weak, but because the base is not matched to the wind load. During the windy season, a standard fence run can become a sail, especially when screening or banners are attached. Understanding how wind interacts with your fence is the first step to keeping it upright.

We approach every fence installation by first assessing wind exposure, site surface, and any added materials. The right securing method depends on those factors—what works on a paved city street may fail on soft soil, and a sandbag that is fine for a short event may be inadequate for a six-month construction project.

Wind warnings are issued when steady winds reach 60–65 km/h or more, with gusts up to 90 km/h. Even without a warning, daily gusts often exceed 50 km/h in many areas. These forces are strong enough to tip an unsecured fence panel or lift it off its base.

How Wind Load Affects Fence Stability

Wind pushes against the face of the fence, creating a lateral force that increases with the square of wind speed. A solid panel or one with a privacy screen catches far more wind than an open mesh panel. That force tries to overturn the fence around its base, so the base must provide enough weight or anchoring to resist the overturning moment. The taller the fence, the greater the leverage.

Corners, ends, and gaps in a fence line are most vulnerable because they lack the mutual support of neighboring panels. Place sandbags directly over the fence feet or cross bars so the weight bears down where the panel contacts the ground. Make sure the sandbag is secure and won’t slide off; some sandbags have straps or loops. After a storm or high wind event, check that sandbags have not shifted or been displaced. Remember: sandbags do not anchor the fence to the ground, so they are not enough for screened fences or extreme wind.

Advantages of Rubber Bases for Windy Conditions

Heavy rubber bases are a step up from sandbags because they are purpose-built to receive fence feet, providing a stable, non-slip platform. They do not penetrate the ground, so no utility locates are required. Rubber bases are ideal for paved surfaces where you cannot drill, and they can be reused many times. Their weight—often 20–40 kg each—lowers the fence’s center of gravity.

Proper Placement and Pairing with Other Anchors

Set a rubber base under each fence foot or at every panel joint along the line. On hard surfaces, ensure the base sits flat and the fence foot is fully seated in the channel. For higher wind loads, pair rubber bases with sandbags on top or with ground anchors at intervals. We often use rubber bases as the primary support and add spikes or braces only where the wind exposure is greatest.

Selecting Appropriate Spikes for Different Surfaces

Ground spikes and bolts physically attach the fence base to the ground, providing far more resistance than simple weight. For soil, use long steel spikes driven through holes in the base. For asphalt, heavy-duty spikes or lag bolts can work. For concrete, wedge anchors or drop-in anchors are needed. Before any ground penetration, we always arrange for underground utility locates.

Drill pilot holes if required, then drive or bolt the anchor firmly. Use washers to spread the load and prevent the base from pulling over the bolt head. Space anchors at each base for high wind, or every second base for moderate conditions. Soft, loose soil does not hold spikes well—if the spike pulls out by hand, upgrade to T-bars or another method.

T-bars, also called T-posts, are driven deep into the ground—usually 2 to 3 feet—and provide strong lateral resistance. T-bars are also useful when the fence must hug a curb or follow irregular ground.

Drive the T-bar vertically until only the top portion is above ground, then attach it to the fence frame or base with a clamp or wire. Space T-bars every 10 to 20 feet along the fence line, and always place one at each corner and gate post. In extreme wind zones, install a T-bar at every panel joint. Frozen or heavily compacted ground may require pre-drilling or special equipment.

Attach one end of the brace to the upper rail or mid-rail of the panel, and the other end to a ground anchor placed a few feet away from the fence line. Tighten all connections and check them after each storm.

Jersey barriers are massive concrete blocks that provide an extremely stable foundation for temporary fencing. Because they are so heavy, they anchor the fence by sheer mass, and they can support screened fences without additional ground penetration.

Combining Jersey Barriers with Other Anchoring Methods

Place Jersey barriers end-to-end to form a continuous base, then set fence panels on top or attach them with clamps. For extreme wind conditions, add sandbags on the barrier feet or tie the fence to adjacent structures if possible. Ensure barriers are level and butted tightly together to prevent gaps that could catch wind.

Reinforcing Fences When Using Screens or Banners

Increased Wind Load from Screens and Banners

Adding a privacy screen or banner turns an open mesh fence into a nearly solid wall, multiplying the wind force on the fence by several times. Even screens with wind vents do not significantly reduce the load. This is the single most common reason for temporary fence blow-overs during the windy season.

Additional Securing Measures for Screened Fences

When screens or banners are attached, we always upgrade the securing method. T-bars and wind braces become mandatory, not optional. Increase the number of ground anchors, use Jersey barriers where possible, and consider removing screens during forecasted high-wind events. Never rely on sandbags or rubber bases alone for a screened fence.
